Today’s Circle Time Reading…
We had a very successful first day on the job today! We started the day with a great breakfast prepared by Kirk’s team, then headed to the work site after our daily circle time. Due to our preparation on Sunday we were able to start a number of projects soon after arriving on the site, literally from top — attaching the steel cap along the peak of the roof — to the bottom — drawing the outlines of the walls we’ll be building with chalk on the concrete floor, to help us get an idea of the layout.
Much of the work today involved preparing the window openings to receive nice windows, which includes squaring up the masonry and installing wooden frames, called a “buck.” Some of the kids have already tried their hand at mixing cement and mortar and setting some blocks! We’re also making the main entrance larger, to receive a production double door; tomorrow we’ll hoist the “Lasagna Beam” built by Jan’s “Beam Dream Team.” Another essential task that started first-thing this morning was attaching hurricane ties from the roof trusses to the top plates on top of the block walls.
The kids have been amazing, willing to dive into a wide variety of projects with enthusiasm and an eagerness to do anything. We can already tell, it’s going to be a great week and we’re going to get an incredible amount of work done!
On the way to the project site tomorrow (Tuesday) we’ll pick up more lumber to carry us until a large order arrives at some indeterminate point…
Check out the Day 4 photos! (more being added)
